When pilots are in the landing phase of flight they are on final approach. The approach plates help keep them away from obstacles as they descend. The plates also give pilots information like distance from the runway and frequencies for the airport. All major airports around the world have approach plates for safe landing. 

This sums up my story. From one runway to another.
